About Russell Reservoir Wildlife Management Area

Russell Reservoir Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in northeastern New Mexico within Colfax County, encompassing a freshwater reservoir created by impounding the Cimarron River. The area's landscape is characterized by rolling foothills, riparian zones, and open woodlands comprising pinyon pine, juniper, and cottonwoods along the water’s edge. This WMA plays an important role in habitat protection, offering refuge to a variety of wildlife species including mule deer, elk, wild turkeys, numerous waterfowl, and other migratory birds which attract birdwatchers year-round. Established to promote wildlife conservation and public recreation, the area offers an accessible fishing destination known for species like trout and catfish. Visitors can enjoy shoreline fishing, kayaking, and wildlife photography opportunities. Several trails and roads provide access for hiking and mountain biking. The reservoir itself is managed to sustain fish populations and maintain aquatic habitat quality. Seasonal migrations bring diverse animal sightings, making it a favored spot for naturalists and recreational anglers alike. Its relative remoteness provides a peaceful outdoor experience away from more heavily trafficked sites. With camping allowed in designated areas and ample shoreline access, Russell Reservoir Wildlife Management Area serves as a multi-use natural space balancing conservation goals with outdoor enjoyment.
